What Does Save The Rat Bike Mean?
Everyone is welcome to have their own point of view. For me is the capability to appeciate the beauty in everything that has a story behind it and proudly shows the signs of time.
Any kind of bike can be part of it : old school mtb, commuter, track, tracklocross and any kind of fixedgear bike, road, ciclocross, singlespeed, cargo, DIY, touring, frankestein bike, etc… Used frames, rust, scratches, dents, uncovered welds, stickers, dust, dirt… but not only, the state of use isn’t important, we are talking about something deeper and poetic: a story!
Save The Rat Bike was born almost by chance, in the form of simple stickers in the vibrant streets of Stockholm. At the time, I was deeply immersed in online galleries that celebrated a particular aesthetic, raw, minimalist, and rebellious. I followed forums like Fixedforum and LFGSS, where this underground culture thrived. Among the discussions, one symbol kept catching my eye, an emblem that seemed to capture the essence of this movement. Curious and inspired, I reached out to a guy in Stockholm, one of the first to use this icon, Bankiren, and shared with him my vision: to create a platform that would unite enthusiasts from around the world, a place where we could share and celebrate this passion through photos and stories, making this symbol the official banner of a growing community.
He loved the idea and gave me his blessing. That conversation sparked something much bigger than I had anticipated. From there, the Instagram channel @save.the.rat.bike was born, and it grew at an astonishing pace, inspiring countless people. Messages of gratitude from enthusiasts began flooding in, and what had started as a simple emblem on a sticker evolved into a symbol of a worldwide community. Over the years, the hashtag #savetheratbike exploded across the internet, becoming a rallying cry for those who share the same love for cycling, a movement, a culture, and an identity that transcends borders.
As this journey unfolded, I found myself connecting with incredible individuals who, like me, embraced this vision. These encounters sparked another idea: I began interviewing these people, documenting their stories, and exploring the shared passion that united us all. This collection of interviews eventually became my first book dedicated to Save The Rat Bike, capturing the heart and soul of this unique community.
